HCX Migration workloads from vSphere to VMware Cloud Director – Part One

This demo demonstrates the capability for HCX to migrate workloads from a vSphere environment to a VMware Cloud Director organization VCD

The source site is named Bastia and the target site is named Toulouse

HCX Connector and HCX Cloud are used for this demo

The Disaster Recovery feature is unsupported for a configuration with VMware Cloud Director

What is necessary to apply this demo ?

From the source site we need at least one Esxi host with the vCenter appliance, HCX Connector appliance and external services (DNS and NTP) installed.

From the target site we need a cluster that can integrate the vCenter appliance, HCX Cloud instance, external services (DNS and NTP), NSX, Cloud Director and then a RabbitMQ server installed and configured in VCD.

An organization VCD must be created and ready for the incoming workloads.

HCX Architecture

HCX Connector

About HCX Connector, the appliance is installed to the source site. It can be replaced by the HCX Cloud appliance if NSX is installed.

HCX Connector manages

  • Service Mesh creation
  • Migration task
  • Network extension creation
  • Service Mesh Resync and update

HCX Cloud

About HCX Cloud, the appliance is installed to the target site. NSX is mandatory to install HCX Cloud

During the setup HCX Cloud is connected to vSphere or Cloud Director. In our case it has be connected to Cloud Director

RabbitMQ server is mandatory for a setup with VCD

Organisation VDC has to be configured in cloud Director before the setup of HCX Cloud

This is the end of the first part, in the second part we will continue with information about the site pairing, the service mesh and the types of migration.
